What I've Learned from Oprah Winfrey
It is no secret that I LOVE Oprah. I think she is an incredible businesswoman and an amazing role model. Despite growing up in poverty and the abuses she suffered from family, she's become one of the most powerful women in the world. I've even tried (unsuccessfully) to get tickets to her show when it was still on-air!
I recently listened to an interview she gave at the Stanford Graduate School of Business back in 2014 (listen here) and she says something that's stuck with me:
"Align your personality with your purpose and nobody can touch you"
What does this mean to me? It means that success comes from being honest, being focused, and from feeling that you have a purpose.
Being honest - To me, this means being upfront with oneself about your flaws. What do you need to work on? What areas of your life do you struggle with the most? What are your personality weaknesses - and strengths?
Being focused - What do you want in this life? What do you really, really want? How can you bring your personality in sync with those goals?
Feeling that you have a purpose - Although this might seem obvious, this one is CRUCIAL. You have to BELIEVE that you have a purpose. This is easier said than done and I think a lot of us struggle with this feeling. But none of the above is going to be effective if you feel like you're just muddling through your day. It also won't work if you're too cynical or if you're trapped in low self-esteem. None of this worthlessness talk! You're destined for great things!
Now the only question left is: What are the steps you need to take to get there?
